愛茉爾覺得自己臉頰一熱，趕緊挪開眼睛，小聲說了句謝謝。
裡德爾向她伸出那隻剛剛還握着她的手，攤開手掌。
“Studying for the qualification test?”（在為資格考試複習？）
少女赧然，發出咯咯一聲笑，空曠的雪地裡，如空谷黃莺一般。
“Not studying, sir, learning.”（不是複習，先生，是學習。）
說着，把那本大厚書交到了他手裡。
書裡都是七年級也不會學的高級魔藥。湯姆翻過吐真劑、福靈劑、死亡藥水等等，動作在書後面的一頁停了下來。
“The effects and uses of the Emerald Potion please, Miss Sayre.”（請告訴我翡翠藥水的功效和用途，瑟爾小姐。）
少女閉眼回憶了片刻。
“The Emerald Potion, otherwise known as the Drink of Despair, is a glowing green potion that could not be penetrated by hand, vanished, parted, scooped up, transfigured, or otherwise made to change its nature in any way. It could only be drained away by drinking, and even though it isn’t immediately fatal, it induces a burning, insatiable thirst in the drinker, severe pain and weakness, hallucinations that force one to relive their worst fears, and a sense of intense despair and hopelessness, thus its name.”（翡翠藥水，也稱為絕望劑，是一種發光的綠色藥水，無法用手滲透、無法消失、舀起、變形……或以任何方式改變其性質。受害者隻能通過飲用來使其消失。盡管它不會立即緻命，翡翠藥水會讓飲者産生無法滿足的口渴感、極度的疼痛和虛弱、迫使飲者通過幻覺重溫他們最深的恐懼，并導緻最強烈的絕望，它因此而得名。）
愛茉爾想了想，擡頭看着他。
“The book doesn’t mention what its potential uses are, sir, but I imagine it is a powerful guard against intruders. By causing severe physical and mental torment, it probably acts well as a deterrent against anyone attempting to steal a treasure, its effects incapacitating or severely weaking any intruder.”（書中并沒有提及藥水的用途，先生，但我想，它可以有效防範入侵者。通過造成嚴重的身體和精神折磨，它能對任何試圖盜取某寶物的人起到很好的威懾作用，其效果能使一個人被嚴重削弱。）
少女偏着頭，又思考了片刻。
“Of course, it could also be used for…malicious purposes. Is there an antidote to the Emerald Potion, sir?”（當然，它也可被用于……做惡。翡翠藥水有解藥嗎，先生？）
湯姆合上書，問道： “Care to hazard a guess, Miss Sayre?”（無妨猜一猜，瑟爾小姐。）
“Hmm…Phoenix Tears to counter the Essence of Boggart, perhaps 3 or 4 drops. A good dose of the Calming Draught for the suffocation caused by Lethifold Slime. Generous amounts of Dittany for the Murtlap Tentacles, and a fat chunk of high-quality chocolate, sir, if available.”（嗯……鳳凰眼淚能抵抗博格特精華，或許3、4滴就夠。一些甯安劑，來對抗伏地蝠的粘液。新鮮的白鮮，來對付莫特拉鼠的觸角，然後再加一大塊高質量的黑巧克力，先生。當然，用法用量有待商榷。）
湯姆笑着把書放進他的乾坤袋裡，幫愛茉爾拿着。
“Hired, Miss Sayre. Congratulations. You’ll be dealing with those little urchins in no time.”（你被錄用了，瑟爾小姐。恭喜，你很快就得去應付那群該死的小壞蛋了。注：urchins有‘頑童’的意思，但也指海膽，藥材之一。）
愛茉爾也笑了。
“Lucky for me, I’d only need to deal with dead urchins, sir.”（那我可走運了，因為我隻需要應付死海膽，先生。）
兩人相視一笑，在霍格莫德村的入口處止住了腳步。
“Honest to heart, sir, I think you’re doing a great job. You’re the best professor—teacher—I’ve ever had. Better, in my opinion, than even Professor Dumbledore when he was still teaching.”（講真，先生，我認為您做得很好。您是我遇到過的最好的教授、老師。在我看來，您甚至比鄧布利多教授還在教書時都要好。）
湯姆心裡一暖，唇角的笑意卻淡了幾分，巡着愛茉爾雙眼，想看她有多認真。少女白裡透紅的小臉兒從厚圍脖中探出來，因為在寒冷中運動而分外紅潤，一雙明亮的大眼毫不躲閃地認真凝望着他，目光灼灼。
湯姆避開眼，選擇開個玩笑搪塞過去。
“Will you promise me to keep this between you and me, Miss Sayre? I’d still like to keep my job for a few more years.”（你得跟我保證，瑟爾小姐，将這話保密。我還想再在這兒多工作幾年。）
愛茉爾也笑了，垂下目光，把臉藏回了圍脖裡。
“I promise, sir.”（我保證，先生。）
兩人間的沉默忽然就多了分尴尬，幾秒後，愛茉爾才把臉從圍脖裡移出來，道：“Well, I’ll be on my way then, sir. Thank you for…for…”（那我這就進去了，先生。謝謝您……嗯……嗯……）
她不知道自己該如何道謝——謝謝他給她開後門，讓她能來霍格莫德？謝謝他沒有像施舍一樣讓她跟來，而是以讓她清點學生的方式——以他助手的身份——來霍格莫德？那一刻，愛茉爾忽然發現，很多話，裡德爾教授隻是不會挂在嘴上而已。
他打斷了她。
“I’ll probably need your help, Miss Sayre—you never know the trouble students get themselves into. I think it’s best if we stick together.” （我很可能需要你幫忙，瑟爾小姐——你永遠不知道學生們能惹出多少麻煩。我認為咱們最好待在一起。）
愛茉爾意識到自己難以壓抑唇角泛起的笑容，忙重新把臉藏回了圍脖裡。
“Good idea, sir.”（好主意，先生。）
“After you, Miss Sayre.”（請進，瑟爾小姐。）
